Introduction
When you receive the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour, you begin your new life. The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 5:17 “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away, behold all things have become new”.
What do you have to do to start your Faith Journey?
Remember that you cannot earn God’s salvation. It is by His grace that you are saved, through faith (Ephesians 2:8). This means that you acknowledge that Jesus died on the cross for your sins, and that God raised Him from the dead, and, because you have confessed Him as your Lord, you are saved.
Start by praying this prayer:
“According to Romans 10:9-10, I confess with my mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord, and believe in my heart that God has raised Him from the dead. It is written in Romans 10:13 that whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Lord Jesus, today I ask You to save me. I give my life to You, and I receive You as my Lord and Saviour. I admit that I have been a sinner. Please cleanse me from all my sins. Mark 11:25-26 says that as God forgives us we should forgive those who have hurt us. I therefore forgive [ mention the name(s) of anyone who comes to your mind ]. Help me to hear and follow Your Holy Spirit. Thank You, Lord Jesus Christ! Amen.”
The next step on your new journey
This book “Welcome to your Caring, Faith Community” is designed to help you begin your new life in Christ, and to understand your purpose as part of the Church. It is an important step of your equipping process.
To start with, there are 5 things that will help you as you begin your new life in Christ.
1. Get a Bible
Your Bible will become the most important book in your new life, because it is God’s Word. You need to get your own personal copy as soon as possible, as it is the handbook for your new life. This could be a physical or digital book. There are plenty of online or app versions of the Bible as well. We suggest that you ask your Pastor or Leader to recommend a version that may suit you. While some of the language used in various Bible versions may be different, the message is still the same! Take some time each day to read (or listen to, if it is audio) your Bible. While you do, expect God to speak to you through your thoughts and through what you are hearing or reading.
2. Attend Church and Join a Lifegroup and/or Generational Community
As you continue to attend Accelerate Church, one of the best things that you can do as a new believer is to join a Lifegroup and/or Generational Community. It will help you establish a basic foundation for your new life. In a Lifegroup and/or Generational Community you will meet other believers who can encourage you to grow spiritually. Hebrews 10:24-25 teaches us that we should not neglect gathering together to encourage one another in love and good works. A very important gathering is the Sunday Services where the Preacher shares what they have received from the Lord for the week, which we can then discuss in our Lifegroup and/or Generational Communities.
3. Meet your Discipler
As you begin your new life, you will find it helpful to have someone to guide you in your spiritual growth. The leader of your Lifegroup and/or Generational Community will introduce you to someone who could be your Discipler. He or she will meet with you regularly, to discuss what you have learnt during the week and to answer any questions you may have, and to pray with you.
4. Pray and listen to God
Listening to God is a vital part of your new life. You can begin now by taking time on a daily basis to talk with Him. Keep your prayers simple, just like talking to a friend. Talk to God about whatever is on your mind. He is always ready to listen to our requests. As with any good conversation, prayer should be a two-way thing. Allow time for God to speak to you. Recording your thoughts in a journal or diary can be very helpful. Don’t be concerned about the amount of time – any time spent with God is great! Often God will speak to you through your thoughts and circumstances. In Section 6 of this book, you will learn more about how to hear from God.
5. Study this book and engage in this process
“Welcome to your Caring, Faith Community” is divided into 12 sections. You could, for example, finish this book in four weeks by completing 3 sections per week, or complete it at your own pace. Once you have completed a section, we encourage you to take your booklet to your Discipler, who will discuss the completed section with you. Alternatively, if you want to work through it with someone, talk to your Discipler, or ask a leader to help connect you with a Discipler.
Section 1: Salvation
Congratulations! Your decision to follow the Lord Jesus Christ is the most important decision that you will ever make in your life.
What does this mean?
Your decision to follow Jesus has and will dramatically transform your life. Your relationship with God has changed. He has now become your Father and you have entered into a personal and intimate relationship with the Creator of the universe. This took place when you made the decision to accept Jesus as your Saviour. John 8:44 tells us that before we were saved (accepted Jesus as our Lord and Saviour), we (intentionally or unintentionally) served Satan, the father of lies. Romans 5:8 tells us that God demonstrated His love towards us by sending His Son to die for us and releasing us from spiritual darkness and bondage.
Your condition before salvation
The Bible tells us that through sin (the word ‘sin’ means ‘falling short of God’s standards’), you have been separated from God and nothing you do can please God. Because of sin, you cannot enjoy the relationship with God that He desires for you. You are not alone, however. The Bible says in Romans 3:23 that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Sin can be placed in two categories - sins of commission (wrong things that we willfully do or commit), or sins of omission (not doing what is right and what we ought to do).
As a sinner you cannot please God
Romans 3:10 tells us that our righteousness (our efforts to be completely moral and meet God’s level of perfection) is unacceptable to God. Therefore, no matter how hard we try, our efforts and works cannot please God. Ephesians 2:8-9 tells us that we are saved by faith in Jesus and not by our own efforts. God now views us and receives us like He does Jesus.
You were dead in your sin
Even though God really loves you and desires to have a relationship with you, you were separated from Him as a result of sin. Because God is totally good and perfect, He cannot tolerate any form of sin near Him. The Bible calls this being “dead in sin” (Ephesians 2:1-3). Until you met Jesus, you could not enter God’s presence. Jesus opened the way into God’s presence by dying on the cross as payment for our sins. Now we can come into God’s presence and be in relationship with Him because of what Jesus did (Hebrews 10:19-20).
What does it mean to be saved (have salvation)?
This means that you now have a new personal relationship with God based on what Jesus did on the cross for you. You are now a child of God. This relationship was established when:
- God convicted you of your sins (John 16:8-11)
- You turned to God in repentance and placed your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ (Acts 20:21)
- You confessed Jesus as Lord and believe that God raised Him from the dead (Romans 10:9-10)
- You received Jesus through faith (John 1:12; Ephesians 2:8-9)
What happens at salvation?
- Redemption: The penalty of your sins is paid for and the power of sin is broken in your life (Ephesians 1:7).
- Cleansing: Your sins are washed away. From God’s perspective, it is like you never sinned (Titus 3:5).
- Regeneration: You are born again; you get to start a new relationship with God (John 3:5; 2 Corinthians 5:17).
- Justification: God sees you as if you never sinned before. Because of this, you have peace with God (Romans 5:1; 2 Corinthians 5:21).
- Adoption: You have become one of God’s children (Romans 8:15).
- Acceptance: You are fully accepted just as you are by God (Romans 15:7).
- Eternal life: You receive the gift of eternal life and the promise of heaven (John 5:24).

Introduction
The purpose of this series is to bring each believer to a time of soul searching and cleansing; into a place of real freedom in Christ. This Spiritual Orientation guidebook shares basic concepts and values which are vital to becoming free from areas that satan might use to ensnare us. Our desire is to see every believer live in spiritual victory and enforce satan’s defeat, which Christ established by dying on the Cross.
The main purpose Jesus came to this earth is captured in His own words:
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed” (Luke 4:18 NKJV)
By the power of His Spirit, Jesus’ desire is to deliver everyone who is experiencing problem areas in their lives. No child of God can honestly say that they’ve never been exposed to anything that has had a negative impact on them (made them less than they were created to be). You may have already dealt with past sins and hurts, but this booklet, together with the Spiritual Breakthrough Weekend, will help you identify and expose hidden areas in your life, maybe even things you are not yet aware of.
Every child of God has the responsibility to search their heart for hindrances that are preventing them from walking in the fullness that the Lord has promised. Philippians 2:12b NKJV says “... work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.” Through these next steps in your discipleship journey, you will be equipped to experience the total freedom that God desires for you.
Section 1: Spirit, Soul and Body
The Bible tells us that as a man thinks in his heart, so is he (Proverbs 23:7). As born again children of God, we are now instructed by God’s Word in Romans 12:2 to transform our minds from the old corrupted patterns and habits, and become Christ-like in our thinking and doing. This includes not only addressing obvious sins, but also addressing areas that may not necessarily seem like a ‘sin’, but still prevent us from achieving God’s destiny for us (e.g. negativity, doubt etc).
Spirit
1 Thessalonians 5:23 tells us that we consist of spirit, soul and body. This is because we were created as a reflection of how God Himself is - three but one. Because of this, if either our body, soul or spirit is not performing as it should, it will affect the other areas as well.
Before we were born again, our spirit (sometimes also referred to as our spirit-man) was subject to the rule of satan and his influences. 2 Corinthians 4:4 tells us that satan, who is the god of this world’s system, has blinded the minds of all unbelievers. Because they have not accepted Jesus as their Saviour, satan has the legal right to control and manipulate their lives. However as believers, we know that we have made a choice by our own free will; a choice to give the Holy Spirit the right to come and make His home in our hearts, and take control of our lives. As we continuously surrender to the Holy Spirit’s control, we can become free of satan’s influence on our spirit.
Soul (The Mind)
Although our spirit has been born again, our soul (the part of us that makes us unique and special, including our personality) which controls our mind (consisting of the will, intellect and emotions) has to go through a process of ‘house cleaning’. This is going to be an ongoing process. We have to ‘reprogram’ our minds and get rid of all that ‘excess baggage’ and negative ‘programming’ that we have accumulated over the years, or it will surely slow us down.
Many of the thoughts and emotions that we think are our own are actually not, but rather the result of corruption or demonic influence designed to stop us being all we were created to be.
On the Cross, Jesus paid for all our mental, physical and spiritual pain and suffering. His invitation to us is to come and lay those burdens down at the foot of the Cross, and walk away free, healed and delivered. It is going to take some tough decisions to get rid of these ‘bondages’ in our homes (bodies), but “whom the Son sets free is free indeed.” (John 8:36)
Body (Our Five Senses)
Another term for the body is our flesh. The Bible tells us in 1 Corinthians 3:16 that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. We, therefore, have a responsibility to not defile our body and soul with ungodly habits and ways. God calls us to walk in the spirit and not according to the lusts or evil desires of the flesh.
In Galatians 5:19-21 Paul lists the works of the flesh. Because the flesh has been dictating behaviours and thoughts to our mind for so long, we have to knowingly, willingly and purposefully crucify the works of the flesh on a daily basis. The only way that we will be able to overcome the flesh is by fixing our minds on the things of God and practicing His presence (this simply means spending time with Him as with a friend, and being aware of His constant, comforting, strengthening, protecting presence). This is not behaviour modification but rather allowing the grace of God to empower us to change. We can overcome and do all things through Him who gives us the strength (Philippians 4:13).
Declare the Lordship of Jesus
The following story illustrates what the devil does to us if we have unyielding areas in our lives.
“There was a man who invited the Lord Jesus to come and stay in his home. He prepared the guest room and was a very gracious host. One morning, there was a knock at the front door. When the man opened, the devil pushed him aside and wrecked both levels of the house except the guest room. The man was very confused and asked the Lord why He had allowed satan to wreck his home!
Jesus told him that He had only been given access to the guest room and had no right to intrude in the rest of the house. The owner of the house was very distressed, but then offered the Lord the run of the entire top floor of his home, as well as the guest room.
The next morning there was a knock at the front door. Upon opening, satan once again made his entrance and rudely knocked the man about, messing up the entire ground floor, but he did not enter the area allocated to the Lord. Once again the man was dumb-founded as to how the Lord could have allowed satan to wreak so much havoc in his home. The man approached the Lord to inquire about satan’s audacity. Finally, the Lord explained that the only way the owner could expect total protection was by giving Jesus the total run and ownership of the house. This, the owner did willingly, and the next morning when a knock on the front door was heard, Jesus answered and guess what? NO ONE WAS THERE!”
This illustrates how the devil can impact our lives. However, the Word of God tells us that we have been delivered out of the kingdom of darkness into the Kingdom of God which is the Kingdom of His dear Son, Jesus Christ (Colossians 1:13). We now have the responsibility to make Him Lord, not only of our spirit, but Lord of our body and soul.
Notes
Section 2: The Mind the Battleground
Man’s number one enemy is satan; his playground is our minds. Victory started when we made Jesus our Lord and Saviour. Victory will be consummated when the nature of Jesus has been fully developed in our soul and mind.
There are many references in the Old and New Testaments where God refers to the mind as the source of trouble. It is here, in our mind, where we win or lose our battles. Proverbs 21:23 tells us that if we are able to guard our tongue and mouth, we will keep our soul (mind) from trouble. Proverbs 25:28 tells us that if we have no rule over our own spirit, we are like a destroyed city without a wall. The mind is the seat of our will to choose between good and evil, right or wrong. It controls our well-being and it controls our emotions. It has the ability to totally destroy our lives or radically change us into powerful instruments in the hand of the Lord.
Experiencing victory in this life starts with the renewal of our minds. Romans 12:2 (NIV) reminds us of this saying, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will.” (emphasis added). God, by His grace and through His Word, has given us all we are ever going to need to succeed. Jesus paid the full penalty for sin on the Cross. All we have to do is confess our sins, accept God’s transforming power and claim victory, thereby enforcing satan’s defeat over our minds.
Follow this simple rule: “PRAY and OBEY”.
The Power of Prayer
Many Christians don’t experience God’s power in their lives to the extent they would like, because they do not spend sufficient time praying effectively. Prayer is communication with a living, willing and able God. Prayer and meditating on God’s Word builds faith and turns our frame of mind from the negative to the positive. This process causes our confessions (declarations) and actions to line up with our convictions (beliefs, which is now based on the Word). The final outcome can only be victory. God cannot change, and He doesn’t need to. He is perfect, therefore we must change.
This process obviously does not occur overnight, but is determined by our own pace. God will always meet us at our level of commitment.
The Power of Submission (Obedience)
James 4:7 says that we are to submit to God and resist the devil and he will flee. The first step here is to submit. Submission is a powerful principle and is a continuous process. Godly submission will unleash God’s protection and provision.
James 1:22 says that we are to be doers of the Word and not hearers only. By obeying the Word we demonstrate our submission to God, and this act, in turn, unleashes the power to resist the devil and cause him to flee. We need to understand that we cannot resist the devil in our own strength, but on the strength of God’s Word and our submission to His Word. The level of submission to God’s Word can determine the level of our resistance to satan.
We submit to God by allowing His Word to take first place in our lives. This will affect the way we think and act. We cannot think right thoughts and do wrong things, just as we cannot do right things and think wrong thoughts. When we think according to the Word of God about everything, we will act in alignment with our thoughts (which have been submitted to God). When we do not think according to God’s Word, we tend to act (or react) wrongly. We get what we think about. Focussing on sin makes sin grow; focussing on God makes His influence in our lives grow.
The Power of God’s Grace
When we understand and act on God’s Word, His grace is activated in our lives, freeing us from both satanic influence and our own sinful nature. Understanding Romans 5:20-21 (DLNT) is a key to this freedom. It says “But where sin increased, grace super-abounded, in order that just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness, resulting in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord”. This verse tells us that while the pull of negative thoughts may feel strong, God’s grace is far stronger - it ‘superabounds’ whenever we need it!
When we stop focussing on satan’s lies, our own sinful thoughts, or the resulting actions, but instead focus on the superabounding grace of God, His blessings for us, and our identity in Him, we will find and experience how His grace frees us to live according to His Word.
As stated earlier, this is not behaviour modification where we work hard to try to think and do the right thing. It is the miraculous, transforming power of God’s Word setting us free as we focus on Him and His goodness towards us.
Philippians 4:8 (AMP): “Finally, believers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable and worthy of respect, whatever is right and confirmed by God’s word, whatever is pure and wholesome, whatever is lovely and brings peace, whatever is admirable and of good repute; if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think continually on these things [center your mind on them, and implant them in your heart].”
Notes
Section 3: Identifying Strongholds
2 Corinthians 10:4-5: “(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ” (KJV).
From the above scripture we learn that satan puts wrong and unscriptural thoughts in our minds, thus setting up his strongholds. We need to identify and pull down these strongholds (fortresses).
We must understand that salvation is only the first stage of God’s plan for our lives. The next stage is to identify and tear down strongholds that are keeping us from walking in the freedom of the Holy Spirit. A stronghold is a hiding place for demon activity, and from this position, they defend their right to operate in our lives in whatever sinful manner we have allowed them to. The Word tells us clearly that these strongholds are in the mind and we are to root out these negative forces by replacing them with the Word of God and seeking God’s grace and forgiveness.
It is important to understand that the picture of demon possession presented by most media (movies, novels etc.) is actually not how the Bible describes demonic activity. While some people differentiate between oppression and possession by demonic spirits, the Bible uses the word daimonizomai (demonized), meaning “afflicted by a demonic spirit” (see Matthew 8:16-17). People are what demonic entities try to take ownership of, and individuals (even Christians) can give demons access to parts of their lives.
Think of it like an army taking ground in a battlefield - the army could have no ground, some ground, a lot of ground or even all the ground. The same is true of demonic activity in a person’s life. This taking of ground is what we call a stronghold.
This is not something to be afraid of. The Bible is clear that Christians have authority over demonic forces and these can simply be commanded to leave. It is every believer’s responsibility to submit to God and resist the devil (James 4:7). We shouldn’t tolerate or engage with thoughts or conversations that do not agree with the Word of God, as these are often demonically inspired and can become a doorway for the enemy to enter and build a stronghold.
Mark 16:16-18 (ESV): “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
1 John 4:1-6 (TPT) reminds us to carefully examine what is said to determine if it is of God, because many false prophets have mingled into the world, and explains how we can know the difference between the Spirit of Truth and the spirit of deceit.
If this chapter has raised any concerns for you, talk to your discipler or leader for advice and guidance. This subject will be handled in more depth on the Spiritual Breakthrough Weekend Encounter (E2).

- Section 2: Types of Evangelism
- Section 3: “Oikos” Connections
- Section 4: My Personal Testimony
- Section 5: Salvation Plan for Man
- Section 6: Verification of Completion and Conclusion
Introduction
Practical Christianity can be summed up in Jesus’ words: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37–39).
We have a two-fold service in the Kingdom of God:
- Our service to God, bringing Him worship, praise and all that is due to Him.
- Our service to mankind: getting people saved, caring for the poor, paying our taxes, and more.
The noblest way of loving your neighbour is to introduce them to the Lord Jesus and reveal God’s eternal plan for them. Fully embracing the salvation plan brings wholeness in spirit, soul and body (Romans 1:16; Matthew 6:33; Luke 6:38; John 10:10; Psalm 1).
The Great Command and Great Commission
The “Great Commission” of the Lord to the Church is to spread the gospel over the whole earth (Matthew 28:19; Mark 16:15–18). Jesus said He will make us “fishers of men” (Luke 5:10), using different “methods of fishing” to bring people into His Kingdom.
God’s desire is to save all
God intends that all people should be saved; those who reject His offer choose eternal separation from Him. Jesus paid for the world’s sin on the cross and sent the Holy Spirit to draw people to Himself (John 3:16; Romans 10:13; John 1:12; Luke 19:10; 1 Timothy 2:1–5; 2 Peter 3:9).
Empowered by the Holy Spirit to witness
God empowers every believer to fulfil their role in the Great Commission (Acts 1:5–8; 2:1–4, 17–21, 37–40; Joel 2:28–29; 1 Corinthians 12:13; Matthew 3:11; Luke 11:13; 24:49). “You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses” (Acts 1:8).
The main function of the Spirit’s anointing is to testify of Jesus and His goodness. Love is at the heart of evangelism (2 Corinthians 5:14); being a witness is as much about what you do as what you say (Luke 9:26; Romans 1:16; 2 Timothy 1:8).
Soul winners are wise
Daniel 12:3 says those who turn many to righteousness “shall shine like the stars forever and ever.” Wise stewards feed others spiritually (Matthew 24:45). The Holy Spirit gives wisdom as you deal with each person (Luke 21:14–15).
A challenge to all disciples
Time is short, and disciples have a responsibility to bring in the harvest. We may not all go to distant lands, but we are all called to witness to those around us: family, friends and acquaintances. Let the love of Jesus in your heart inspire you to reach those who are perishing and without hope.
Reflection questions
Section 1: Steps in Soul Winning
These steps can help you lead someone to the Lord. Always be led by the Holy Spirit and avoid treating them as a rigid formula.
- Remember that on the cross Jesus paid for the sins of all humanity. You can present each person to God by name and in faith, claiming their salvation in line with His Word (1 Timothy 2:1–4; John 6:44).
- Pray that the Holy Spirit will convict them of sin, righteousness and judgment leading to repentance (John 16:7–10).
- Ask God to send someone across their path to witness to them about the love of Jesus.
- Pray that God will use circumstances to awaken them to their need for salvation.
- Bind the work of the enemy in their lives and break curses that hinder their salvation, in Jesus’ name (Ephesians 2:1–2; Matthew 18:18).
- Pray for boldness and Spirit-led words and actions (Acts 4:29–31; Acts 14:3; Ephesians 6:18–20).
- Always minister in love, not condemnation. Build relationship and maintain a servant’s attitude (1 Corinthians 9:22).
- When ministering to family, let your transformed life speak. Husbands, love your wives; wives, win husbands through respectful, godly conduct; children, honour your parents (1 Peter 3:1–7; Ephesians 5:22–26; 6:1–3).
- Use your testimony, which is a powerful tool (Revelation 12:11).
Never leave a new convert without care. Follow-up is vital. Help them with any new believer materials, encourage them to attend a Home Cell and Sunday Celebrations, and come under prayer cover. Keep praying for them until they are strong in the Lord (Galatians 4:19). Mark your Bible clearly with key salvation Scriptures so you are always ready.
Section 2: Types of Evangelism
Many Christians associate evangelism only with famous evangelists, street preachers or door-to-door work. These narrow views can make “ordinary Christians” shy away, feeling unqualified or afraid.
Ephesians 4:11–12 shows that the five-fold ministry exists to equip all saints for the work of ministry. If evangelism were left only to a few, most of the lost would never be reached. Every Christian has a testimony and can be trained to lead others to the Lord.
Traditional evangelism – mass crusades
Jesus and the apostles often ministered to large crowds, with signs and wonders confirming the Word. This is the ministry of the evangelist. These “harvest events” (crusades, concerts, special services) are most effective when there is a strong follow-up system connecting new converts to local churches and small groups.
Personal evangelism
This is one-on-one evangelism. It requires sensitivity to the Holy Spirit and an awareness of where the person is spiritually. Avoid confrontational approaches that close hearts. Let God’s love and light open them to receive Jesus (Isaiah 50:4; John 1:47–51; John 4:7–26).
Friendship evangelism
Most people come to Christ through family or friends. Build genuine, long-term relationships with unbelievers. Live out godly values that lovingly challenge sinful patterns, and share testimonies of God’s goodness and provision in your life. These seeds will bear fruit over time.
Cell group evangelism
Small groups (cells) are designed to do evangelism in a natural, non-threatening way:
- Cells live on the “cutting edge” of the harvest.
- They have a workforce on site, ready to reach out.
- They train workers in real-life settings to become leaders.
- They rely on the Holy Spirit for power and keep activities simple enough to allow time for outreach.
Cells pray regularly for unsaved family and friends, invite them into a warm environment, host social events, visit the sick, and demonstrate practical love. This is like net fishing rather than line fishing—more people can be reached together.
Reflection questions
Section 3: “Oikos” Connections
What does “Oikos” mean?
“Oikos” is a Greek word meaning “house” or “household”, and by implication, “family” (Acts 16:31; Luke 19:9). Your oikos includes family, friends, colleagues and others you regularly spend time with.
Christians often spend most of their time with other believers, which can prevent unbelievers from hearing the gospel. It is vital to build bridges beyond our comfort zones and establish oikos connections with those who don’t yet know Christ.
Every cell should have strategies to reach unbelievers. New members must be welcomed and cared for in the oikos; otherwise they may drift back to their old circles.
Reaching beyond your current oikos
When you run out of obvious contacts, look to others’ oikos networks (for example, family members’ circles, work contacts, service providers). By extending beyond your current oikos, you can potentially reach many more people.
Other potential connections
Additional connections include business colleagues, sports groups, hobby groups and special-interest communities. Build trust, break down walls of resistance, and allow the Holy Spirit to prepare hearts.
Reaching people from other cultures or religions often requires patience, friendship and finding common ground, supported by prayer and fasting.
The “man of peace”
In Luke 10:1–7 Jesus sends His disciples to look for a “man of peace”—someone whose heart is open to the Good News. Once such a person is reached, they often become a key to their wider oikos. The cell then plays a vital role in follow-up and ongoing discipleship.
The power of prayer in evangelism
Pray for God to give you His heart for the lost. John 3:16 shows the power of love in action and the greatest motive for evangelism. Ask God to baptize you in His love and keep that love alive by focusing daily on reaching the lost. Persistent prayer brings in the harvest.
Reflection questions
Section 4: My Personal Testimony
Revelation 12:11 says believers overcome the enemy “by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.” Your personal testimony is one of the most powerful evangelism tools you have.
It is the story of how God delivered you from darkness into the Kingdom of His Son, how you received eternal life, and how His peace has come to dwell in you. Testimonies often include elements of healing, deliverance, provision and God’s supernatural intervention.
The proper use of your testimony
You are encouraged to prepare your testimony in writing so you can share it briefly and effectively, for example during the E3 Evangelism Encounter.
A simple structure:
- My life before I received eternal life – share selectively and sensitively; avoid unnecessary details.
- My born-again experience – how you came to realize your need of a Saviour and received Jesus.
- How my salvation has changed my life – what has changed since you met Christ.
Pray beforehand and ask the Holy Spirit to highlight the part of your story that will connect with the person you are speaking to. Be a good listener before you speak, then share relevant parts of your story in a few minutes. Focus most on how God has changed your life.
Key elements to include
- Discovering Jesus as Lord and Saviour.
- Realizing the cost of your salvation and the grace of God.
- How your lifestyle and values began to change.
- New desires for holiness and righteousness.
- Finding a loving church family or cell group.
Write your testimony (outline)
Section 5: Salvation Plan for Man
Once you can share your testimony, the next step is explaining God’s salvation plan clearly.
God’s original plan
Psalm 8 shows that God created humans, crowned them with glory and honour, and gave them dominion over the earth. Father, Son and Holy Spirit made man in their image and likeness (Genesis 1:26–27) for fellowship and to share His nature.
The fall
God placed two trees in Eden: the tree of life, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. He warned that eating from the latter would bring death—spiritual and physical. Adam and Eve believed the serpent’s lies, disobeyed God, and fell into sin and spiritual death (pride and disobedience; Isaiah 14:12–15).
Since then, all have sinned and fall short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23). The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus (Romans 6:23). Spiritual death is separation from God. People cannot save themselves by good works or religion.
God’s rescue plan – “The Journey” diagram
When sharing the gospel, you can use a simple diagram to show:
- God and Adam in original fellowship (Psalm 8).
- Sin and spiritual death separating humans from God (Romans 3:23; Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:1).
- Jesus stepping in as the sinless Saviour (Philippians 2:5–8; John 3:16).
- Our response: repentance and faith (Romans 10:9–10; 1 John 1:9).
- Water baptism and the baptism in the Holy Spirit (Romans 6:4; Acts 1:8; Acts 2:38).
- The ongoing journey with Jesus – being conformed to His image (Romans 8:29).
Explain that salvation is a free gift (Ephesians 2:8–9). Jesus did everything necessary; we cannot earn it. Once we are saved, our life-long journey of transformation begins.
The three key steps (Acts 2:38)
- Repent / Salvation – confess Jesus as Lord and believe God raised Him from the dead (Romans 10:9–10); confess sins and receive forgiveness and cleansing (1 John 1:9). Repentance means turning away from the old life and allowing the Holy Spirit to dwell in us (Colossians 1:13).
- Water Baptism – identify with Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection, symbolizing dying to the old nature and rising to new life (Romans 6:4).
- Receive the gift of the Holy Spirit – receive power to live a holy life and to be a witness (Romans 8:13–14; Acts 1:8).
The cross as reconciliation
- The vertical line represents God coming down to humanity in Christ, paying for our sins with His sinless blood (Leviticus 17:11).
- The horizontal line represents reconciliation between God and people through the finished work of the cross; Jesus is the “last Adam”, a life-giving Spirit (1 Corinthians 15:45).
We must understand what Jesus has done for us (complete salvation as a gift) and what He wants to do in and through us (living His life through us as we submit and obey His Word).
The sinner’s prayer (example)
You can lead someone in a prayer along these lines:
According to Romans 10:9–10, I confess with my mouth the Lord Jesus Christ, and I believe in my heart that God has raised Him from the dead; therefore I am saved. It is written that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Lord Jesus, today I call on Your name for salvation. I give my life to You. I receive You as my Lord and Saviour. I confess that I have been a sinner. Please wash me in Your blood and cleanse me from all my sins. I forgive all who have sinned against me. Write my name in the Lamb’s Book of Life and fill me with the Holy Spirit. Thank You, Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
